The School Clinical & Consulting Services (SCCS) treatment approach for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is eclectic. It is based on a combination of strategies and fundamental principles from many different approaches to treating ASD, including; structured teaching from Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children), incidental learning from Stanley Greenspan (floor time), Kathleen Quill, and many others, ecological intervention from the SCERTS Model (social communication emotional regulation and transactional support), and applied behavior analysis (ABA).

Reducing Confusion And Increasing Organization By Providing Explicit Routines
Replace Verbal With Visual, Show Rather Than Tell

ASD Students have trouble adjusting to new routines, changes in routine, and a breakdown in structure. They like things to be predictable and orderly. When there is a breakdown in the normal routine, when the day is too chaotic, or when the schedule is too full, the ASD student becomes overwhelmed, easily upset or agitated, and may withdraw or have an outburst. There are many sources of stress for the ASD student that are not stressful for the typical student.

It is important to remember that the ASD child needs the culture of the classroom to support the social values and social skills that (s)he is attempting to develop. (S)he needs to see other people using these skills, and (s)he needs to see the value and relevance of these skills as they apply to life in the classroom. Specific effort will need to be made to help the ASD child notice and understand as social values are being recognized. For more information about the nature of social functioning please see Description Of Social Functioning.

At some point we need to find a way to provide the ASD child with the opportunities to develop that are provided to other children. If we continue a plan of removing all obstacles, supporting all efforts, and modifying all experiences in the same fashion year after year, then we are settling for stunted emotional growth and contributing to the severity of the ASD handicap.

The management of student behavior, regardless of disability, is less of a burden on the school day when the organizational elements listed below are put into place first. Without these fundamental elements, the entire day may be spent managing behavior and very little of anything else may be accomplished. When the class is physically organized with a variety of space configurations, visually supportive, and communication simplified, behavior can be effectively addressed.
