The classroom is a working, developing community with its own culture, its unique way of doing things, its own value system, its own set of spoken and implied standards of behavior, and its own way for students to achieve success and recognition. It can be a cold and competitive community where there isn’t enough recognition to go around, a hostile and mean community where members are often excluded, sometimes humiliated and punishment is the primary means of control, or it can be a warm and supportive community where students feel welcome, cared for and well respected.
