Dealing With the Emotional Impact of the Pandemic on Educators and Returning Students

We must give serious thought to the stress and the emotional impact that working under pandemic conditions has created for educators, because they will be returning to the school buildings in the fall and the job cannot be done well by people who are worn out, burdened by stress, scarred by trauma and filled with feelings of guilt, regret and inadequacy.

The pandemic experience has already had a profound effect on educators personally, professionally and emotionally. What can we do right now…

In all cases of the good fit program, you are using the student’s motivation to work harder to make things a good fit, and to accept responsibility when the activity or situation is no longer a choice (rather than the student placing blame externally). Also, “good fit” enables students to experience another chance at reward activities, but it is another chance with growth potential, a chance to do it differently, a chance to learn a new way to be successful with the activity or situation.

The classroom is a working, developing community with its own culture, its unique way of doing things, its own value system, its own set of spoken and implied standards of behavior, and its own way for students to achieve success and recognition. It can be a cold and competitive community where there isn’t enough recognition to go around, a hostile and mean community where members are often excluded, sometimes humiliated and punishment is the primary means of control, or it can be a warm and supportive community where students feel welcome, cared for and well respected.

It is important to remember that the ASD child needs the culture of the classroom to support the social values and social skills that (s)he is attempting to develop. (S)he needs to see other people using these skills, and (s)he needs to see the value and relevance of these skills as they apply to life in the classroom. Specific effort will need to be made to help the ASD child notice and understand as social values are being recognized. For more information about the nature of social functioning please see Description Of Social Functioning.

There are many good reasons for providing parents with information about student performance at the end of the school day. However, the communication between school and home should provide parents with a view of the entire day, not just selected memories, and it should include an objective measure of student performance. The information should not be anecdotal. It should be based on a rating scale that can be used to make comparisons throughout the day (across subjects and time) and from one day to the next.
