Comprehension guides support children when comprehension breakdown is a significant contributor to their emotional and behavioral problems in the classroom. Behavior intervention programs are frequently limited in their success, because they do not adequately address student understanding of what is expected and what to expect. This is especially the case with students who have trouble discerning the nuances of routines and situations.

Comprehension guides provide detailed and visually supported guidelines to illustrate what is expected and why. They help students understand the nuances of classroom routines and they increase the precision of behavior intervention programs.

Many children understand that learning something new can be a struggle at first. No one is born knowing everything they need to know and knowing how to do everything, so children expect to be shown and taught, and they expect to get a lot of support as they try to acquire skills and knowledge. They expect to stumble and to do poorly at first, but they want to try and they want to get better and they know that no one expects them to know what to do or how to do it…

As this routine is followed, the visual of the routine can be displayed and checked off. It is important for the student to see that there is a clear process leading to a solution, going from confusion to clarity. However, once the routine is more automatic, it can go along more quickly and needs no reference to the visual support. When you reach this point…

Everyone likes to follow their regular routine. It makes the day easier and it is more comfortable for our brains and our bodies. People at school try to make sure that the students can follow their regular routine, but sometimes a change happens and this can be challenging for some students. Some students become stressed and then…

Please see all Warming up/Staying Neutral downloads below this article.

Prior to beginning this program, read Staying Neutral, A Warm Up Routine for a thorough understanding of the challenge the student faces, the problems it presents, and how to use this program to support the student. The rest of the materials described below (and how to use them) will only make sense after reading Staying Neutral, A Warm Up Routine.

Prior to starting the Warming Up, Staying Neutral Program this Comprehension Guide should be read with the student a few times. The Warm Up, Stay Neutral Story has the same content, but it’s condensed into two sheets of paper. This might appeal more to older elementary school and younger middle school students, and it’s easier (than the guidebook) to reference quickly when needed.
